Wilmington, Delaware, Man Dies in NJ Turnpike Tractor Trailer Crash in Robbinsville

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ (MERCER)–Trooper Brandi Slota from the New Jersey State Police, Public Information Unit told MidJersey.News that Troopers responded to a two vehicle crash on the NJ Turnpike southbound on the outer roadway in Robbinsville Twp, Mercer County at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a Kenworth tractor was pulling an enclosed trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike in the southbound outer Roadway and a Western Star tractor was pulling a flatbed trailer directly behind the Kenworth tractor.  

In the area of milepost 59.9, the front of the Western Star tractor struck the rear of the trailer being pulled by the Kenworth tractor. The Western Star tractor struck the right concrete traffic barrier and the left guardrail. During the crash, the sheetrock load from the Western Star’s trailer was spilled onto the right lane and right shoulder.  As a result of the crash, the driver of the Western Star, identified as Wilbert Normand, 50, of Wilmington, Delaware sustained fatal injuries.

Construction Van Burns on NJ Turnpike Near Exit 7A in Robbinsville

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ (MERCER)–Just before 3:20 p.m. firefighters operating at a serious tractor trailer crash south of Exit 7A noticed a column of smoke in the air north of their location and called for mutual aid from Hamilton and Allentown-Upper Freehold to handle a construction van fire.

Firefighters from Hamilton Township arrived at mile post 60.6 and found a well involved construction van on fire that had a report of acetylene and oxygen tanks exploding inside prior to arrival. Firefighters used a 1 3/4 hose to knock bulk of the fire down and another line to extinguish the fire. Firefighters from Allentown-Upper Freehold arrived on scene and assisted.

The fire on the inner roadway plus the accident on the outer roadway and a couple of other reported incidents backed traffic up approximately 6 miles from an area south of Exit 7A to Old York Road in East Windsor.

Serious Crash on NJ Turnpike South of Exit 7A

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ (MERCER)–A serious tractor trailer crash occurred around 2:37 p.m. near mile post around 59.8 south bound in the outer roadway just south of Exit 7A. The driver of the truck suffered life threatening injuries at the time of the crash. Firefighters from Robbinsville, Hightstown and Bordentown responded to the scene to extricate the driver. EMS from Robbinsville and Capital Health Paramedics responded to the scene. The New Jersey State Police requested a medical helicopter to the scene that was later canceled. Radio reports indicated the driver passed away at the scene. The New Jersey State Police is investigating the crash.

Traffic was backed up for over six miles in the south bound direction while the accident was investigated and the truck and its contents were removed from the Turnpike.

As of 8:00 p.m. traffic is flowing normally on the NJ Turnpike.
