ROBBINSVILLE, NJ (MERCER)–Just before 3:20 p.m. firefighters operating at a serious tractor trailer crash south of Exit 7A noticed a column of smoke in the air north of their location and called for mutual aid from Hamilton and Allentown-Upper Freehold to handle a construction van fire.

Firefighters from Hamilton Township arrived at mile post 60.6 and found a well involved construction van on fire that had a report of acetylene and oxygen tanks exploding inside prior to arrival. Firefighters used a 1 3/4 hose to knock bulk of the fire down and another line to extinguish the fire. Firefighters from Allentown-Upper Freehold arrived on scene and assisted.

The fire on the inner roadway plus the accident on the outer roadway and a couple of other reported incidents backed traffic up approximately 6 miles from an area south of Exit 7A to Old York Road in East Windsor.
